By now, most people know that in his so-called “sweat lodge,” James Arthur Ray disrespectfully borrowed traditional Native American sacred practices for use in his endurance boot camp, in order to produce “abundance” in the gullible participants. Two of those participants died. Like many, I feel sad for the families of the victims, and agree that it’s appropriate for the legal system to hold Ray accountable. But it’s a mistake to dismiss Ray as just one “bad apple.” Why? because he exemplifies a bona-fide risk for spiritual seekers. Until people can learn to distinguish between spiritual authority and authoritarianism, and between spirituality and spiritual materialism, some will fall prey to charismatic individuals, like James Arthur Ray. A newly discovered pathogen, visible only under an electron microscope, is destroying plants and undermining the health of livestock, thereby posing a deadly risk to the U.S. food supply, a senior plant pathologist warned USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack. In a January 2010 letter to Vilsack, (a former Iowa governor and agribusiness champion, appointed by President Obama), Dr. Don Huber advised caution in introducing additional GMO crops. What will it take to Save a free internet, PBS, and NPR from Media Monopoly?
First, believing that Congress is yet again trying to eliminate access to a free internet and a free press. I attended the National Conference for Media Reform, hosted by Free Press, a 10 year old organization to whom we owe thanks that the internet, thriving with creativity, connection, and diversity, does not resemble television. Although in a few days, that could change thanks to the latest from the 2011 Congress.

Our second action this week is curbing the nuclear threat here in the U.S. There are two featured actions. First, tell President Obama not to use taxpayer dollars to fund nuclear power. In an on-line article, published in the Lancaster On-Line, Teddy Borawski, a geologist who is the Chief of the Minerals Section in the Bureau of Forestry, in the Pennsylvania State Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), is quoted as making an anti-semitic comment about documentary film-maker, Josh Fox, whose film, Gasland, has won many awards and was an Oscar nominee for Best Documentary this year.
Fox’s film raises health, environmental, and human rights concerns with a gas drilling practice called hydraulic fracturing, which Borawski espouses. In his comments, speaking to the Pennsylvania Dutch Chapter of the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters Society, in Nettsville, PA Borawski, reportedly told the audience that “Joseph Goebbels would have been proud,” of Josh Fox, who is the grandson of Holocaust survivors who fled Europe. Borawski further suggests that Goebbels “would have given (Fox) the Nazi Award.” Read More→
